Massage Schools -- More than Just Your Average Trade School

By C. Bailey-Lloyd

Contrary to common belief, massage schools do not only offer coursework in massage and bodywork, there are a great number of massage schools that provide in-depth curriculums in anatomy and physiology; which entail diverse levels of instruction in cellular; tissue; organ; molecular; musculoskeletal; endocrine and central nervous systems to gain a general understanding of how the body functions, and how these systems work together in order to maintain balanced homeostasis.

Aside from pathology and clinical practice, massage schools also provide education and training in body mechanics; more specifically, kinesiology. As a science, kinesiology shows the interrelationship between muscles and human movement. In a massage school, students will learn how this biological function is integral to overall wellbeing; and will use this knowledge to further their palpation and treatment skills.

Other vital training that is extended to massage school students may involve skills in communication; basic business; and relevant massage practice software instruction; notwithstanding continuing education.

Okay, now comes the best part of massage school training: the diverse modalities that are offered. In addition to standard massage therapies such as Swedish massage, Sports massage, deep tissue and reflexology; massage schools also afford extensive training in Shiatsu; acupressure; Chinese medical massage; Tuina; Lomi Lomi; neuromuscular therapy; lymphatic drainage; cranial sacral therapy and over 100 other massage modalities.

Massage schools teach these and other unique massage therapies so students are better able to expand their expertise and practice. Massage school students that successfully finish their training, may attain a certificate of completion or diploma (depending on individual schools). While each school and State vary in educational requirements, it is wise that prospective students carefully review curriculums so all necessary training can be met to achieve appropriate certification and/or diploma.
